Telematics for LGV & HGV Fleets

Telematics for Light Goods Vehicles (LGVs) and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) combines GPS tracking and onboard diagnostics to monitor real-time vehicle location, fuel consumption and driving behaviour – turning your fleet from a cost centre into a managed asset.

You can't manage what you can't see. Every LGV and HGV on the road already generates a constant stream of data – position, speed, fuel use, braking events, engine fault codes. Telematics captures that data and turns it into decisions: which vehicle is burning too much fuel, which driver needs coaching, which trailer hasn't moved in a week, and which fault code needs an engineer before it becomes a breakdown.

What Telematics Monitors

  • Real-time vehicle location – live GPS positions for every vehicle, with geofencing alerts when vehicles enter or leave depots, customer sites or defined areas. See GPS fleet tracking
  • Fuel consumption – actual fuel burn per vehicle, per route and per driver, drawn from onboard diagnostics. Identify fuel theft, inefficient routing and vehicles that need attention
  • Driving behaviour – harsh braking, rapid acceleration, excessive idling, speeding and cornering events, scored per driver. See driver behaviour monitoring
  • Onboard diagnostics – fault codes read remotely from the vehicle's electronic systems, so maintenance is triggered by condition, not just the calendar
  • Working time & utilisation – ignition-on hours, stop times and mileage, giving an accurate picture of asset utilisation across the fleet

HGV vs LGV Telematics – What's Different?

The underlying technology is the same, but the emphasis differs. HGV telematics leans heavily on compliance and cost control: tachograph-adjacent movement records, fuel and AdBlue monitoring on trunking routes, trailer tracking and coupling data, and integration with maintenance schedules for O-licence peace of mind. LGV telematics focuses on productivity and duty of care: proof of attendance for multi-drop rounds, route optimisation, and defending your business against fraudulent claims with incident reconstruction.

Telematics + Trailer Aid: Data and Spanners Together

Most telematics providers sell you the data and leave you to act on it. As working commercial vehicle engineers, we close the loop: when telematics flags a rising fuel trend, harsh-braking cluster or an EBS fault code, our mobile engineers and workshop are the team that fixes it. One partner for insight and action.

FAQ

Telematics FAQs

Telematics for Light Goods Vehicles (LGVs) and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) combines GPS tracking and onboard diagnostics to monitor real-time vehicle location, fuel consumption and driving behaviour. Data from the vehicle's own electronic systems is transmitted to a cloud platform where fleet managers can see exactly what every vehicle is doing, where it is, and how it is being driven.
Yes – often more so. A five-vehicle fleet feels the cost of wasted fuel, an uninsured-style accident claim or a stolen trailer far more sharply than a thousand-vehicle operator. Fuel savings of 5–15% are commonly reported after telematics adoption, alongside lower insurance premiums and fewer unauthorised-use incidents.
Perfectly. Telematics flags the symptoms – harsh braking events, rising fuel consumption, fault codes from the vehicle's diagnostic port – and our engineers fix the cause. Customers on our fleet maintenance contracts can use telematics data to trigger inspections based on real vehicle condition rather than the calendar alone.
Telematics complements the tachograph rather than replacing it. GPS data provides an independent record of vehicle movement, helping resolve disputed driving-time events and supporting your duty-of-care documentation. The legal record remains the tachograph – which we also fit and calibrate.
